The City of Lamoni joined communities across Iowa this spring in a statewide initiative from the Iowa League of Cities encouraging municipalities to celebrate America’s 250th Anniversary through youth art. Cities were invited to host a coloring competition and display the completed artwork in a public space before submitting photos to the League.
“Lamoni students embraced the challenge with enthusiasm,” Mayor Douglas Foster said. Last week, City Hall received 175 colorful entries from preschool students through sixth grade. Photos of their artwork is now headed to the Iowa League of Cities to shine in the statewide celebration.
Lamoni Community Schools Art Teacher - Rhonda Mickelson coordinated the project with the city, ensuring every elementary class had the opportunity to participate. Each grade colored the same commemorative America’s 250th Anniversary page, highlighting the unique creativity and interpretation of students across age groups.
To recognize student effort, each grade level had its own competition bracket. A special commemorative coin honoring the anniversary was awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. In addition, all 175 participants received a card redeemable for a free small Koolee (slushie drink) at the local Maverik store. “We appreciate Maverik for supporting local youth and helping make the celebration even more memorable,” Foster said.
After the display period, the artwork was returned to the school so students can take their creations home before the end of the academic year.
“Lamoni’s participation not only celebrates a milestone in American history but also highlights the community’s commitment to creativity, civic pride, and partnerships that uplift local students.” Foster said.
